Year 8 students visit Manchester United training ground to work with the BBC
On Friday 7th October a group of year 8 students visited The Cliff in Salford for the BBC Extra Time event. The event was set up in the indoor sports hall on the very astro turf graced by United legends past and present such as Bryan Robson, Norman Whiteside and Ryan Giggs. The students split into 2 groups and took part in several activities on a carousel basis.
The group with Mr. Watts took part in a number of activities such as creating a football animation using digital cameras, Apple Mac computers and a Subbuteo football set. They then had the opportunity to develop their football skills in a session led by professional coaches before taking part in creating a football themed radio play.
The group with Mr. Morris first of all had the opportunity to see who could do the most ‘keepy uppys’ before moving on to conducting a ‘live’ post match interview. Students had to write a script for the interview, carry it out and then prepare and present a post-match analysis for a news programme.
The event was just the latest in what is fast becoming a regular link between the school and the BBC, and with the BBC now locating many of its shows to Media City in Salford we can hopefully look forward to many more educational opportunities where students get to try out ICT themed activities in a real life context.
