Reading for Pleasure

As you have recently been informed, reading for pleasure will be a key focus for the next academic year with each child brining a book of their choice into school every day. To help you and your child choose a book that they will both enjoy and is suitable to their reading needs, we have included a reading list for both KS3 and KS4.

Ofsted Inspection Visit: Tuesday 14th November 2017

On Tuesday 14th November 2017 we will have a one day inspection visit from Ofsted. This is a chance for staff and students to showcase what a fantastic school we are. Further information for parents is available in the attached letter and guidance. The inspectors are interested in the views of parents/carers.

 Our annual Open Evening will take on Thursday, 28th September 2017 from 6.45pm – 9pm. The evening is an opportunity for children in year 6 and their families to visit Alder Community High School.

GCSE Exam Success

I am absolutely delighted with our students' fantastic GCSE results. Overall, the percentage of students gaining a grade 4 or above in both English and maths is 73% and 50% for grade 5 and above These are excellent results; both figures are predicted to be way above the national average.

There has been so much uncertainty about the results with all the changes the Government have made but despite this the students have pulled through with some magnificent individual achievements. Some of our students have struggled through adversity and have performed above all expectations.

New intake induction evening and transition days

We will be welcoming the parents and carers of our new year 7 intake on Tuesday 4th July at 6.15pm. The children are welcome to attend with their parents if they wish.
The children will then take part in a 2 day induction and transition programme at Alder on Thursday 6th and Friday 7th July from 9 am to 2.20 pm.  More information will be given at the induction evening.

Support for the Homeless

 Prior to half term my assembly highlighted the plight of the homeless  -  both from the point of view of people as well as animals.  A target of 834 tins of food was set  -  one tin from each student/adult in school or 25p which would then be used to buy tins.  The target was met!!!!  Over 1000 tins/packets of food was brought/bought and this will be being distributed at centres in Tameside.

Rock Guitar in 11 Dimensions

 The Science Department is pleased to offer a fantastic opportunity for year 10 and 11 students to participate in a curriculum enrichment activity by attending the one hour show, Rock Guitar in 11 Dimensions, on Tuesday, 15th November at 6.30pm in the school hall.  The show will be hosted by Famelab winner Dr Mark Lewney, a guitar Physicist, who will explain the physics of rock using riffs from Vivaldi to AC/DC, explain the secret of the Stradivarius, and show how string vibrations might lie at the heart of the Big Questions about the universe.

Excellent 2016 GCSE results!

Our GCSE results saw 72% of students achieving 5 or more A*-C grades including English and Maths.  More importantly, progress in both English and Maths was outstanding with 81% and 86% of students respectively making expected progress which is way above the national average. 


Congratulations to the class of 2016 who, just like team GB, have surpassed all expectations – well done!

Celebrating a Year of Sporting Success

 The TES (Times’ Educational Supplement) Awards are now in their eighth year. These are national awards and there are 16 categories. We are part of the Tameside wide English team that won the award English teacher or team of the year; a magnificent achievement! In memory of Kirsty Saunders, Year 11

 On Thursday, 11th February, Kirsty sadly passed away after a brave, long battle with leukaemia.  Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this most difficult of times.

Parent Voice

Being part of Parent Voice gives you the opportunity as a parent or carer to give feedback, make comments and suggestions on important issues around school.  It also gives you an informal way of raising general issues that we need to address.   

CAMHS name change consultation

During recent visits, Ofsted inspectors highlighted that some CAMHS across the country are changing their name. They support this approach, as it can help to ‘de-medicalise’ children’s mental health services.

Pennine Care, providers of CAMHS within Tameside want to ensure all key stakeholders have an opportunity to have their say on whether to change the name of CAMHS.

Consultation Briefing

Prior to half term Miss Brunt’s assembly related to the lack of water or the lack of clean water in some areas of the world.  She set the school the task of raising £300.00 in two weeks by everyone donating 41p so as to build a well in Alder’s name in Nepal.  £500.00 was raised!  £300.00 has been given to Water Aid and our well’s construction has begun and should be completed within 6 months.
