Art and Design

"Art has the role in education of helping children become more like themselves instead of more like everyone else”  Sydney Gurewitz Clemens

Our vision within visual arts is to deliver an ambitious and broad balanced curriculum to engage and challenge all students, ensuring we meet the needs of all.

We provide a variety of opportunities to promote their creative independence and build their knowledge and understanding using of a range of artists, craftspeople and designers to inspire their own work to become informed confident learners.

We believe it is important that students experience the use of a variety of materials, techniques and processes to allow them to experiment and develop their own ideas and build their confidence to express their ideas and opinions creatively

We strive for our students to grasp the importance and relevance of Art and Design and how it can lead to a variety of career pathways for the future

We encourage students to engage in enrichment opportunities, offering extra-curricular opportunities for all and actively seek new experiences outside the classroom to enhance the curriculum further.

Independent learning KS3

To support their learning and skill development in lesson, students are set a range of tasks to be completed independently either at home or during art club.

Setting such tasks allows students to refine their work started in lesson, to build on their knowledge by referring to their knowledge organizer and develop their research skills. Independent learning tasks in Art also gives students an opportunity to engage in creative activities in their own time which will enhance their Art and Design education.

Work set will be recorded on Class Charts to help with their organisation and meet deadlines

KS4 Curriculum

Students who opt for Art and Design currently follow the Eduqas Art, Craft and Design syllabus which allows students the opportunity to explore a range of ideas from a variety of Art and Design starting points. Students compile a portfolio of work during the course worth 60% of their final and undertake a externally set task where students have to preparation time that culminates in a 10 hour piece. Both preparation and 10 hour final piece contribute to 40% of their final GCSE mark.

Students can also opt for Photography at KS4. The structure and weighting of the course components for the specialism is the same as the GCSE Art and Design course.

Independent learning KS4

Students must complete coursework independently to compliment what they create in lesson on a weekly basis for at least 1 hour. They are advised to attend art club on a regular basis to support their organisation to meet deadlines. It is important for students to get into the habit of allocating personal time to commit to completing work that is outlined on their checklist and respond to teacher feedback to refine work to attain their best mark possible as this will contribute to their GCSE grade. Students can refer to their knowledge organsiser for guidance.
